What is SEO, in plain English?

SEO, search engine optimization, simply means helping search engines like Google understand your website, so the right people find you when they search for what you offer.

It’s really just being findable

When someone types a question or a product into Google, Google tries to show the most helpful, relevant pages. SEO is the ordinary work of making sure your site is one of them: that your pages load, that search engines can read them, and that your words match what your customers actually search for.

You don’t need to learn the jargon. The practical goal is simple, when someone looks for what you sell, your business shows up.

The three things that usually matter

First, can search engines reach and read your pages at all? Second, do your titles and words clearly say what you do? Third, do you have content that answers the questions your customers are asking?

Most small sites are missing one or two of these, not because the owner did anything wrong, but because nobody told them what to check. That’s exactly what a free audit shows you.

Why it’s changing

Increasingly, people don’t just search Google, they ask AI tools like ChatGPT for a recommendation. Being findable now means being understandable to both search engines and AI. The good news is that the same clear, well-structured content helps with both.
